What is Shady Pets?

Shady Pets is a new tabletop card game invented by Brian Rauch at FireStorm Labs. It’s plays like Clue and Uno yet lets you throw octopuses, deal with naked turtles and avoid hangry hamsters! The game is made up of Action Cards (52) and Pet Cards (32) and also requires the use of Mystery Card Holders and Scoresheets. You must strategically play your Action Cards that empower you to take, show, sneak peek, amplify, expose, ambush and grab your way to revealing more Shady Pets. In defense, you can steal your opponent’s power by throwing an octopus (Facial Card) at them or block them by playing the No Way card! It’s a game full of fun and surprises that will challenge all who play!

Shady Pets is the only game that uses real pet pictures from its fans and customers. This makes the game truly authentic. Not only does it feature the photo, but the pet’s name, the city, and a clever saying for the pet. To do this, Shady Pets offers a photo contest and awards prizes to the winners.

How do I order Shady Pets?

To order Shady Pets you can order online via shadypets.com or via Amazon.

Why did you launch this game Kickstarter and how did you do?

Kickstarter is an American public-benefit corporation based in Brooklyn, New York, that maintains a global crowdfunding platform focused on creativity and merchandising. The company’s stated mission is to “help bring creative projects to life”. As of May 2019, Kickstarter has received more than $4 billion in pledges from 16.3 million backers to fund 445,000 projects, such as films, games, music, stage shows, comics, journalism, technology, publishing, and food-related projects. Kickstarter gives power to the people, allowing users to actually decide what gets made. Becoming an investor in a project creates a special kind of relationship between backers and creators. Projects using the Kickstarter generally create multiple tiers of support. A minimum pledge assures that the funder will get the product in some form, but higher pledges will include additional benefits.

We launched Shady Pets on Kickstarter in October, 2019. We were very thrilled to have over 1,040 backers pledge $34,426 for the development of this game. View our Kickstarter page here.

What is the NSFW version? Is it really obscene?

The Shady Pets “Twisted” NSFW (Not Safe For Work) version offers the same game play as the standard version, but contains card art with adult humor and references not suitable in a kid-friendly version.

It’s definitely more silly than vulgar and absolutely not pornographic in any way!

What is a Throw Octopus?

The Throw Octopus is the perfect accessory for Shady Pets. When you play the ‘Facial Card’ (so you can steal the power of the last card played), toss the throw octopus at your opponent’s face (ideally the one you played your card on, but if not, that’s funny too). Just wait until its their turn to play the facial card! It adds a whole new element of fun to the game!

See; Throw Octopus

Questions on the Facial and No Way Cards - Rule Clarifications
Question 1) Someone plays Sneak Peek, then someone plays a Facial Card, and that is followed by a No Way card. How would that play out?  The No Way eliminates the Facial so the person who originally played the Sneak Peek gets to use the card and look at one of the Mystery Cards.

Question 2) Someone plays Sneak Peek, then someone plays a no way card, and that is followed by a Facial Card. How would that play out? If a No Way is played on Sneak Peek then the Sneak Peek is cancelled. There’s no ability to play Facial at this moment because it’s like the Sneak Peek never existed. The only play here is to play a No Way on the No Way, which cancels the first No Way and returns the Sneak Peek to the person who originally played it.

Question 3) Can you play a no way card to prevent someone from guessing, because their is no action card needed to guess.  You can’t play a No Way to stop someone from guessing. When it’s your turn, and you want to guess, you have to announce you’re going guess and there’s nothing anyone can do at that point (wait until we release our expansion pack though. We’ll have a special card just for that)

Help with 2 Player Game Setup:
Here’s more information that should help clarify how to setup the 2 Player Game:
After you hide the 4 mystery pet cards in the mystery card holders ….
1) Shuffle the remaining Pet Cards (28 at this point), deal 10 Pet Cards to each player (face down).
2) At this point there will be 8 Pet Cards left:
3) Expose the next 4 Pet Cards to the table face up.
4) There will be 4 Pet Cards left. Take these 4 Pet Cards and shuffle them with the Action Cards. Shuffle this Action Card pile well then deal 5 Cards to each player.
5) The remaining cards become your Draw Pile.
6) Each player marks their 10 Pet Cards and the 4 exposed Pet Cards on their score sheet.
Now you’re then ready to play, with the youngest player going first …
Note; As a variation; You can make the 2 player game harder (longer) by dealing less Pet Cards to each player at the start (Try 7 or 8 each), then expose 4 (or 0 if you want to make even harder) then shuffle all the remaining Pet Cards with the Action Cards. Then deal 5 cards from this pile to each player and the remaining cards become your draw pile.
