Next time you’re at a bar or house party, challenge someone to Drinker’s Duel as the loser has to buy or has to drink. In this new party favorite drinking game you’ll strategically race against your opponent to be the first to build 3 whole drinks as you have to deal with “drunk”, sober” and “water break” cards.  CLASSIC version contains 5 drinks: draft beer, martini, red wine, Moscow mule and tequila shot.

This game is perfect for playing at bars and it’s a great ice-breaker to meet people! Introduce Drinkers Duel to a house party and suddenly everyone wants to play. Those with cunning and a little luck will usually win but whether you win or lose, everyone’s drinking more booze and having a great time!

How to play (rules):

Players: 2  (Note: You can add a 2nd deck then play up to 4 players)

Object:   Be the first to complete 3 full drinks by connecting drink cards properly!

Setup:  To start the game, remove the 2 instruction cards then shuffle the cards and deal 5 cards (face down) to each player. Place the remaining cards face down in between the players to form the Draw Pile. Each player receives their cards to their hand holding them hidden from their opponent.  It is recommended to play side by side (like at a counter or bar) but you can also play facing each other (like at a table). The image below shows playing at a table.

 

Select Start Card: After reviewing their cards, each player selects one of their Drink Cards (based on playable options with other cards in hand), and places it face up in front of them. This will be each player’s Start Card. You may not start with a Water Break, Drunk or Sober Card. Each player will now have 4 remaining cards in their hand. See below:

 

Start the game:   Whoever drank alcohol more recently goes first. If unsure, then youngest goes first.

On your turn:  When it’s your turn, 1) draw one card from the Draw Pile or Discard Pile then 2) Play one card down. You may only play your drink cards on already played down drink cards. You many not play one of your drink cards on the other person’s drink cards (duh!).  Once you play a card or discard, your turn is over and the turn proceeds to the next player.

 

Correctly Playing Drink Cards:  You may only connect drink cards by the vertical or horizontal edge. All sides that touch must match perfectly (the glass elements must properly align to the same drink with the correct part).  See below:

Unable to Play? If you can not play you must discard one of your cards Face-Up to a Discard Pile (locate this next to the Draw Pile). Play proceeds to next player.

Discard Pile:  Note that once there is a Discard Pile, when it’s your turn you may either draw the top card of the Discard Pile or the Draw Pile. Be careful what you discard since you don’t want to give your opponent a card they can easily play.

Drunk Cards:  When it’s your turn and you have a Drunk Card in your hand, you may play this card in front of the other player. Drunk cards can be played at anytime. You don’t have to wait until the other player has the completed drink (or has any played cards of that drink type). There are 3 Drunk cards; 1) Tequila Drunk 2) Wine Drunk and 3) Beer Drunk. Once you play a Drunk Card, your turn is over and the turn proceeds to the other player.

Because the object of the game is complete 3 drinks, having a Drunk Card played on you limits your ability to win the game.

Sober Cards: The only way to counter the Drunk Card is to sober up! Or simply play the “Sober” card on top of the Drunk Card. Once the Sober Card is played, the player may now count any drinks involving that corresponding Drunk Card. For example, if you sobered a Tequila Drunk card, you may now count any completed Tequila drinks toward your goal of 3 completed drinks. Once you play a Sober Card, your turn is over and the turn proceeds to the other player.

Water Break:  If you are able to properly play a Drink Card that contains the water mark icon, then the other player has to hydrate or take a water break. This simply means the other player’s turn gets skipped and you get to play again.

Winning:  The 1st person to complete 3 whole drinks wins. The Winner gets to select 1 of the 3 drinks they complete then decides if LOSER BUYS you (or themselves) the drink.

All Draw Cards Taken and Still No Winner?  If you use all the draw cards and there’s still no winner, reshuffle all the cards in both player’s hands with all the discarded cards, then re-deal all the cards. Take turns until there’s a winner.  On each turn, play one card (there is no drawing cards now), then turn proceeds to other player.
