Here’s my story ...

Are you familiar with ‘alopecia areata’? If not, let me inform you that it isn’t, as I first assumed, a musical tempo or gourmet pasta dish, but is in fact an autoimmune disorder that causes hair to fall out in small, circular patches.

I, unfortunately, have this disorder and am pretty shy about it. There may well be some hamsters who manage hair loss gracefully—a hamster equivalent of Samuel L. Jackson, if you will—but I am certainly not one of them.

A few days before Christmas, I was feeling so self-conscious that I decided to escape my cage and hide in the walls of our family home.

I could hear the children calling out ‘Bells! Beeeeells!’ as they walked all around the house, but I couldn’t bring myself to come out, partly because of my aforementioned hair loss and partly because I’d gotten pretty comfortable in amongst some fiberglass wall insulation.

(BT-Dubs, why don’t more people use fiberglass as a blanket? It’s so comfortable! I, for one, highly recommend it.)

I was determined never to leave my wall ever again. That was until Christmas morning, when the family rang their Christmas bells. I was filled with joy by those magical sounds! I came out from my hiding place and climbed up the Christmas tree to get a better look at whole bell-ringing scene.

As I perched myself on top of a bauble, our youngest, Jackie, spotted me and pointed at me with glee. The whole family seemed delighted, and I was too.

And so, Jackie decided to name me Bells, and now whenever those bells ring, I can’t help but come out and play!
